  • Attendance Celebration at Whittington Moor

    Fri 06 Feb 2026

Whittington Moor and Dunston Lead National Attendance Benchmarks in DfE Similar Schools Report Two Minerva Learning Trust schools — Whittington Moor and Dunston — have been recognised by the Department for Education for exceptional attendance performance, ranking top among their 21 matched similar schools in the latest Similar Schools Attendance Report.

The DfE compares schools with others that share similar levels of SEND, free school meal eligibility, pupil demographics, and local context. This ensures a fair and meaningful benchmark — and both schools have significantly outperformed their peers. Whittington Moor achieved an attendance rate of 96.3%, placing it well above the similar‑schools average of 94.1%. Dunston recorded a persistent absence rate of just 10.1%, outperforming its comparison group by 8.6 percentage points.

These results reflect strong leadership, a positive school culture, and effective early‑help systems that support pupils and families. For parents, this recognition signals schools where children feel safe, happy, and motivated to attend — key ingredients for strong academic progress, social development, and long‑term success. For families considering these schools, the data provides clear reassurance that both settings offer a stable, supportive environment where pupils thrive.

Minerva Learning Trust leaders praised the achievement, noting that it reflects both the dedication of staff and the Trust’s wider strategic focus on improving attendance. The recognition also aligns with the DfE’s national emphasis on using real‑time data tools to monitor and strengthen attendance across schools. Both Whittington Moor and Dunston plan to build on this success, continuing to work closely with families and using national benchmarking insights to support pupils even further.

A huge congratulations to both schools for setting an outstanding example in attendance excellence.
