What an exciting term about Food, Glorious Food!

In Literacy we have looked at the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. We looked at the characters, setting, beginning, middle and end of the story. We made a story map to help us remember the order of events. After that we then thought of our own characters and settings, thought of different ways the beans could be magic and used those ideas to make our own Magic Bean stories! We thought of lots of exciting things that our Magic Beans could do, perhaps you have seen all our ideas on the display? We have been using adjectives and connectives even more this term, to make our stories really come to life. Finally, we compared Jack and the Beanstalk with The Enormous Turnip, another traditional story. We found lots of similarities and lots of differences.

In Numeracy we have been finding 1 more and 1 less, 10 more and 10 less than a number between 10 and 100. We’re getting really good at this! We’ve been practicing counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and can use our knowledge of this to count all kinds of things like how many toes are in the room. Knowing our numbers so well means we can also use coins to pay for things, using a combination of 10p, 5p and 1p.

We’re getting really good at telling the time in analogue and digital forms and have made our own clocks. We can tell the time to the hour and half past.

For Science this term we have been learning about plants. We went out and about the school grounds, finding as many as we could. We knew the names of some of them already and used the computer to find out what some others were. We looked at how plants grow and drew pictures to show their key features. We’ve been looking at healthy and unhealthy foods and made food pyramids to help us learn all about what we should be eating. We sorted pictures of different kinds of food.

In Geography, we’ve been learning about other cultures and tasting their food every week. We tried croissants and crepesfrom France, focaccia and salami from Italy, Poppadoms and naan bread from India, fried rice and prawn crackers from China , dark chocolate, milk chocolate and white chocolate! We all liked tasting different kinds of Chocolate for the week about Easter, but then we made a tally chart to find out what our other favourite food was. We liked Salami from Italy the best, closely followed by Croissants from France. We’ve also been finding out where countries are on a globe and using Google Earth to find landmarks such as the Colosseum in Rome. We used North, South, East and West to describe which way we were going.

In ICT we have begun to learn Word Processing skills by learning to type, use the shift and space keys and undo and redo. We can now format the font and change the size and colour of the words we have typed. When we have finished, we can save our work in our own folders.

It’s been very busy, but we’ve enjoyed ourselves a lot and now we’re looking forward to

next term learning about Australia and Around the World!
