Summer 1 - Step back in time

This term our topic was ‘Long, Long Ago’ and we have been looking at toys from the Victorian times. Our home corner was a Victorian toy museum and we had a chance to play with old games that we don't normally play with now! In Literacy, we have focused on animals and in particular the story of Handa’s Surprise. We have retold it, sequenced it, acted it out and then worked with a partner to make our own version. In science Year 1 were looking for signs of Spring and Summer and went to the nursery garden on a Spring hunt, where Year 2 have been focusing on the environment and how to help it by recycling and saving water. We have been using graphs to think about our favourite pets and had to think of sentences to compare the results. In art, we have drawn still life pictures of flowers and a bowl of fruit using pastels and pencil crayons. Year 1 got to take part in an infant agility sports afternoon at Queens Park and had lots of fun. We finished off the term with our BATs day and welcomed all the grown-ups to help us make a summer, growing themed collage inspired by the Well Dressings we might see at this time of year. We had an amazing day when Don and Kathryn from 'Toys in school' joined us to make our own Victorian based toys. We sanded down the wood and coloured our toy to make it bright and attractive. We drilled the holes in the wood and glued the pieces together to make the toys. We also got to look at many toys from the past as well as have a play with our new toys.
