Autumn 1

What a fantastic start the children have had to their reception year, in Birch Class. The children have settled in so quickly and are already producing some fantastic work! The children have loved learning and developing their skills and knowledge through groups sessions and play.

In literacy we have read different stories such as ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’, ‘Owl Babies’, and ‘Pumpkin Soup’ We have been sequencing the stories, predicting what will happen next and answering questions about the stories. In phonics, we have been learning new phase 2 phonemes and the corresponding graphemes, listening to the individual sounds in words and working really hard to sound talk and blend new words.

In maths we have been sorting objects into different groups and comparing them. We have explored patterns and have been creating our own simple patterns. We have been developing our subitising and counting skills, and also looked at counting objects and matching them to the correct numeral.

In RE we learnt about what stories are special to us and to others such as Grace who is a Christian. We learnt about the stories of Jesus calming the storm and David versus Goliath.

In our understanding the world lessons, we have been talking about who lives with us in our homes and what our homes are like. We also talked about how we get to school and what we see in our community such as a doctor’s surgery, school, different shops etc. We also talked about what kind of animals live on a farm and their different homes e.g. a barn. We then looked at what our different body parts are called and the parts we share with some farm animals too.

We have also been working on our Personal, Social and Emotion development through circle times and stories. We really enjoy singing our song – ‘Together as One’. We discussed how it feels to belong and that we are similar and different. We also looked at how we can manage our feelings and why it is good to use kind hands.

In our PE lessons we have been practising how to be a champion gymnast. Learning how to move higher, lower, over and under a range of apparatus. In our music lessons, we have enjoyed listening to different styles of music, different environmental sounds and learning to make our own music using our bodies as musical instruments.

Thank you very much for your support this term, we really appreciate it.

Kind regards, Miss. Bates and Mrs. Rhodes.
